Report about the first ISIBio seminar (french only :-( )
Context of the ISIBio project
The ISIBio project is a french interdisciplinary working group interested in various aspects of "Information Systems Integration in Biology". This animation structure is funded since July 2004 by the French Ministerial "Action Concertee Incitative ACI IMPBio ".
The creation in 2002 of the OntoBio ("Definition et gestion
d’ontologies et de metadonnees pour la biologie") working
group in the frame of the French Ministerial Action IMPG, was followed
in 2003 by the creation of a CNRS ("Centre National de la Recherche
Scientifique") STIC ("Sciences et Technologies de l'Information")
Specific Action :
AS127
entitled "Integration and interoperability of genomic data sources".
This has favored meetings and discussions between a certain number of
scientists from the french bioinformatics community, working in the
field of Information Systems in Biology. Common topics of interest have
been identified with respect to computer people as well as to
biologists.
The interdisciplinary ISIBio working group has thus been created to
continue this dynamics, by the means of organizing twice a year an
international seminar.
Goals of the projet
The goals of this project are first to reinforce the existing collaborations and to stimulate new interactions at the national and international level. It is also expected that the international visibility of the french commmunity in this domain will benefit from this animation activity.
In the post-genomic era, the problems associated with information systems integration in biology remain of crucial importance despite of the numerous solutions proposed in the past few years. The reflexion will be mainly focused on the role of metadata and ontologies, first because they are needed to introduce the semantic dimension in the systems, second because their use prepare the scaling-up process announced by the grid projects
Topics of interest
The following topics in computer science are concerned by this project :
- interoperability of heterogeneous resources,
- mediation architectures,
- knowledge representation and management,
- semantic web-services,
- metadata production and usage,
- ontology construction and sharing.
Several relevant biological domains of applciation may be selected
in order to better delineate the technical challenges of integration
solutions that truly answers the needs of biologists. Transcriptome
analysis is an example of such domains where various groups of data
pertaining from heterogeneous sources need to be integrated in a
flexible manner.
Interactions with the scientific community involved in the statistics
and analysis of data for transcriptome studies, as well as with the
community dealing with the computation grid for genomics will be
established.
Project Organisation
The ISIBio seminar will take place twice a year. It will be preceded by a meeting of the ISIBio working group in order to discuss ongoing or future collaborations.
The ISIBio seminars will be free and open. Funding by the ACI IMPBio will allow to invite scientists from France and abroad for giving a conference at the seminar. An international level of excellence is expected.
